WHAT IS SABIN?

  • A measure for sound absorption commonly used for products like acoustical canopies or baffles
  • 1 Sabin = 1 sf of a perfect acoustical absorber
  • Sabin is a product-based measure - ideal for products installed discontinuously in a space
  • In comparison, NRC is a material-based measure - often used for continuous suspended ceilings
  • How Sabin is calculated:  The number of Sabin per unit is equal to the total surface area of the unit that is exposed to sound multiplied by the absorption coefficient of that material

Multiple canopies can be used at various heights in open areas for improved acoustical absorption.
