OUR ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATIONS

We’re committed to helping you reduce the environmental impact of the buildings you create…from product design and raw material selection, to how products are made and delivered. Now, we have Environmental Product Declarations for 10 product families, including a view of the total ceiling system.

WHAT IS LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT?

A method to assess the potential environmental impacts associated with each stage of a product life cycle.

UNDERSTANDING EPDs

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a declaration for a product or product family. You will find these sections in an EPD:

Product Definition Life Cycle Assessment
Material Content Additional Information, Evidence, Test Certificates
Production of the Ceiling Systems PCR Documentation and Verification
Extraordinary Effects References

The environmental impact areas in an EPD are:

Global Warming Potential – also known as “carbon footprint,” this takes into consideration greenhouse gas emissions, or other emissions that contribute to climate change
Primary Embodied Energy – amount of energy from renewable and non-renewable sources used in the raw material procurement for a product, and the amount of energy required to manufacture it into a new product
Ozone Depletion – thinning of the earth’s stratospheric ozone layer
Acidification Potential – pollutants or emissions that turn into acids and harm buildings, plants, animals, aquatic life, and human health
Eutrophication Potential – when materials contribute to increased quantity of nutrients that leach into water or solid and shift the biological balance
Water Consumption – total amount of water required to produce a product
Smog/Photochemical Oxidant Creation Potential – when emission of chemicals cause smog or air pollution

VALUE OF AN EPD

Environmental Product Declarations (EPD’s) offer:

A holistic view of a product
A summary of performance attributes, aesthetics, and environmental preferences to choose the right product for each project
Condensed information on a product’s environmental impact

THIRD PARTY CERTIFICATION

Armstrong EPD’s have been third party-certified by ICC Evaluation Service as conforming to the requirements of ISO 14025. ICC Evaluation Service assessed that our peer-reviewed LCA fulfilled the requirements of ISO 14040 in accordance with the instructions listed in the Product Category Rules for ceiling panels for suspended ceilings.
