Challenge University Hospital, Birmingham project is a 120,000m², £582 million project providing both acute and Adult Psychiatric facilities
for the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. A joined up attitude to sustainability and the environment was
initiated and supported by all parties, Balfour Beatty, BDP, Armstrong World Industries and Titan Ceilings.
A sustainable ‘Off Cut Recycling’ solution was needed whereby the ceiling off cuts could be collected as they were installed
and later recycled to make new tiles. Another aim was to then use these new tiles on site, effectively making ‘green rooms’
within the building. Acoustic and anti-microbial performance solutions were also required for the hospital environment.
Solution Armstrong set up an ‘Off Cut Recycling System’ that enabled all waste to be captured and collected as it was generated. Balfour
Beatty and Titan Ceilings gave the scheme their full support, guaranteeing the projects environmental success. Armstrong Bioguard
Plain and Armstrong Bioguard Acoustic tiles provided a combination of acoustic, anti microbial, ISO 5 clean room performance
solutions for the Queen Elizabeth hospital.
