MATERIALS & PRODUCT STEWARDSHIP

DID YOU KNOW...

Armstrong has become first ceiling supplier in Europe to achieve Cradle to Cradle® certification.

Cradle to Cradle®

In achieving Cradle to Cradle® certification Armstrong has become the first ceiling tile manufacturer in Europe to be recognised for using environmentally safe and healthy materials designed for material utilisation.

Cradle to Cradle® is an innovation platform developed by architect William McDonough and chemist Michael Braungart for designing beneficial economic, social and environmental features into products, processes and systems.

Cradle to Cradle® reframes design as a positive, regenerative force. Our certification helps customers purchase and specify products that are designed for recycling using manufacturing processes which minimise water consumption, adopt renewable energy strategies and acknowledge social responsibility.

Perla OP 0.95, part of a new generation of sustainable and acoustic ceilings, has been Cradle to Cradle® Certified and also offers:
  • Excellent sound absorption: 0.95 aw
  • Light reflectance of 85%
  • ISO 5 clean room classification
  • Lowest Volatile Organic Compounds emission rating of A+
  • 53% recycled content
  • Fully recyclable as part of the Armstrong Ceiling Tile Recycling Programme
Armstrong are proud sponsors of the Technical Pavilion at Park 20|20, the first full service working environment inspired by the Cradle to Cradle philosophy, in The Netherlands.

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATIONS (EPD)

We’re committed to helping you reduce the environmental impact of the buildings you create, from product design and raw material selection, to how products are made and delivered. Now, we have Environmental Product Declarations for 30 product families, including a view of the total ceiling system.

EPD ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT AREAS

Global Warming Potential
Also known as “carbon footprint,” this takes into consideration greenhouse gas emissions, or other emissions that contribute to climate change.

Primary Embodied Energy
Amount of energy from renewable and non-renewable sources used in the raw material procurement for a product, and the amount of energy required to manufacture it into a new product.

Ozone Depletion
Thinning of the earth’s stratospheric ozone layer.

Acidification Potential
Pollutants or emissions that turn into acids and harm buildings, plants, animals, aquatic life, and human health.

Eutrophication Potential
When materials contribute to increased quantity of nutrients that leach into water or solid and shift the biological balance.

Water Consumption
Total amount of water required to produce a product.

Smog/Photochemical Oxidant Creation Potential
When emission of chemicals cause smog or air pollution.

VALUE OF AN EPD

Environmental Product Declarations (EPD’s) offer:
  • A holistic view of a product.
  • A summary of performance attributes, aesthetics, and environmental preferences to choose the right product for each project.
  • Condensed information on a product’s environmental impact.
THIRD PARTY CERTIFICATION
Armstrong EPD’s conform to the requirements of ISO 14025.

SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS & DESIGN

RAW MATERIAL
Raw materials for our ceilings are renewable and abundant in nature - Biosoluble mineral wool (the wools used in our products meet the classification "exempt" as defined by EC directive 97/69/EC 1997), perlite, natural starch, recycled paper, recycled tiles and clay. None of our ceiling products contain asbestos.

HIGH RECYCLED CONTENT
Create a High Recycled Content (HRC) ceiling system by combining our HRC grid with one of our sustainable ceilings tiles.
  • Combine Interlude 15 XL² HRC grid system (up to 63% recycled content) with MicroLook Ultima, Perla or Dune ceiling tiles (up to 65% recycled content) and maximise your sustainable ceiling system.
  • Armstrong mineral fibre ceiling tiles and suspension systems are 100% recyclable.
  • Contributes to BREEAM, LEED and Ska environmental rating schemes.
A significant proportion of our ceiling tiles are produced using recycled raw materials and recycled ceiling tiles (both during the manufacturing process and more recently post-consumer suspended ceilings returned to the plant). These recycled contents will now be indicated on all Armstrong's published literature in accordance with EN ISO 14021:2001.
