WINNING PROJECT IDEA
Karabots Pediatric Care Center
Brawer & Hauptman, Architects
Way-finding and creating a kid-friendly atmosphere that complimented the prominent, custom-colored glazing found on the front
of the building.
Vivid color is the predominant theme in the design of the Karabots Pediatric Care Center of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Permeating the window glass, covering selected walls and soffits, and saturating the VCT floors of the corridors and exam
rooms. The color not only delivers a vibrant, kid-friendly environment, but also provides a lively way-finding system.
Each corridor that makes up the exam room grid has a different color theme that extends out to the waiting room, guiding the
patient through the clinical area. The density of the tile pattern signals public/patient space versus private/staff space,
and the cross corridors display a composite pattern made from the various colors used in the primary corridors.
