Some designers choose Armstrong® flooring again and again because they know it’s a brand they can trust. We added one more reason. CONTINUUM™ – an exclusive color system organized in tonal steps to unite hue, value and chroma – allows designers to achieve aesthetically pleasing designs without compromising the floor’s sole purpose.

Carol Cunningham, IIDA, Interior Design Project Manager for the Texas Tech University System, was responsible for overseeing the interior design of The F. Marie Hall SimLife Center at Texas Tech University, and found this to be true. Cunningham said “I have been pleased with other projects using Armstrong MEDINTONE™. I know it works well for medical use, and we were able to achieve the aesthetic interest through color combinations and design.”

“By the nature of the project, we treated the Center as though it would be a full-use medical facility,” said Cunningham. The 24,000 square foot educational clinical laboratory that promotes safe, quality patient care through innovative simulation technologies, features multi-modality simulation instruction areas including primary and acute care, a standardized patient program, simulation using advanced patient simulators, and 3-D visualizations.

The facility includes an emergency center, operating rooms, birthing rooms, neo-natal care, exam rooms and urgent care space. “With this in mind, we wanted to use flooring appropriate for each of these spaces,” said Cunningham who chose Armstrong® EXCELON® Stonetex® VCT in the large format 18˝x18˝ size for the exam rooms in the facility.

“We selected Stonetex for its colors, past experience with its durability and slip-resistance, and because it was available in the 18˝x18˝ tile size,” said Cunningham. “We wanted a new look with lots of color and something different than the 12˝x12˝ that is so often used simply because it has always been the standard.”

MEDINTONE™ and EXCELON Stonetex are third-party FloorScore™ certified for low VOC emission, compliant with California Section 01350 and LEED® eligible. “The low VOC’s of these products was definitely a consideration in our selection,” said Cunningham. “With classes and medical facilities adjacent to this area, it was important to keep the indoor air quality at a high level, not only during construction, but also after completion. Indoor air quality is of the utmost concern for all facilities with high use, particularly those in medical and educational fields.”

Even eight months after its opening, The F. Marie Hall SimLife Center at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center was still receiving requests for tours of the facility. “The University, the donor, and our students are all extremely pleased,” said Cunningham. “Everyone is impressed with the flooring designs, color and performance of the products.

EXCELON Stonetex and MEDINTONE are part of the Armstrong CONTINUUM™.

EXCELON Stonetex tiles were installed in patient exam rooms. EXCELON Stonetex is popular in educational settings because it’s long-lasting compared with soft-surface flooring like carpet. Armstrong EXCELON Stonetex VCT offers granite-like visuals and organic colors in true non-directional tiles and “through pattern” construction which means the color and pattern extend throughout the thickness of the tile. This prevents the creation of traffic lanes.

MEDINTONE, with chemically welded seams, was installed in the operating suite and the emergency room. MEDINTONE homogenous sheet is a proven industry standard offering a broad range of colors that coordinate with Armstrong’s portfolio of flooring solutions. Versatility is the hallmark of sheet flooring offering a winning combination of resilience, aesthetics, durability, maintainability and value. Patterns and colors are easily integrated for area-to-area design flexibility and coordination. Armstrong offers homogeneous, heterogeneous and inlaid structures for various applications.
