History of Linoleum

Invented by accident in 1861 by Frederick Walton, the first linoleum factory was established near London in 1864. Between 1882 and 1899, more linoleum factories were established in Europe, several around Delmenhorst, Germany, which is noted for its cork processing. In the early 20th century, Armstrong went to market with its first run of printed linoleum and molded inlaid linoleum floors.

Late 1800s – Linoleum factory 1913 – The first Armstrong linoleum advertisements appeared in trade magazines. 1918 – The first Armstrong linoleum color ad was published in Ladies’ Home Journal
