| The Los Angeles Center for Enrichment Studies (LACES) is a magnet school in one of the nation’s largest school districts.
It can be hard to stand out when you’re one of so many, yet the achievements of the students and teachers at LACES somehow
manage to shine through. One thing that wasn’t shining so brightly at LACES— the floors. “A few years ago, the school district began replacing some of our floors as part of an asbestos abatement process,” said LACES Principal, Margaret Kim. “After only a few short years the floors were showing wear and tear. You could tell the flooring was not a quality product.” LACES was one of seven schools chosen to receive a makeover as part of a new NBC reality television show called “School Pride.” Armstrong® Commercial Flooring was the exclusive hard-surface flooring provider for the show and was happy to provide a variety of flooring products to address LACES performance needs including vinyl composition tile (VCT) and linoleum. VCT is particularly popular in educational settings because it’s long lasting compared with soft-surface flooring like carpet. Excelon ® Feature™ Tile and Excelon ® Stonetex® were selected for LACES. Armstrong VCT features “throughpattern” construction which means the color and pattern extend throughout the thickness of the tile. This prevents the creation of traffic lanes. Marmo rette ™ linoleum was selected because of its combination of natural ingredients and long life cycle. Linoleum is a product made from linseed oil, limestone, wood powder, resin, cork powder and organic pigments. Cork ingredients help absorb impact and sound and provide a comfortable walking surface.
