Environmentally friendly ingredients

Linoleum is the only floor covering offered on the market that is predominantly made of natural renewable raw materials.

Linoleum is made from the following ingredients:

These materials meet the modern demands of architects, clients and users, who ask for a robust and attractive floor covering. Beyond this Linoleum has reached a high rank within the field of building biology and ecology because of its natural components.

Natural resins

Apart from linseed oil, resins are another important component of the binder. A mixture of balsam and copal resin or, as a substitute, dammar resin is often used in the Linoleum production.

Balsam resin is obtained in a similar way to rubber, by tapping from plantation trees. Resin and turpentine are obtained during the distillation of the sap. Copal, on the other hand, is a fossilized resin like amber which is found in the ground in wooded environments. The main areas of origin are Africa, South America and Asia.

Jute

Within the Linoleum production jute fabric is used as a carrier material. It is made of plant fibres. The resources used for the production of jute fabric are also of natural origin, for example the sizing made of potato starch.

Colour pigments

White pigments are used to brighten the otherwise dark brown basic substance of Linoleum. The most effective variety is titan dioxide. It is completely harmless and does not show any biological impact. For the production of the white pigment nowadays eco-friendly production processes are in use.

In the Armstrong DLW Linoleum all the colour pigments are free of lead, cadmium and chrome. The dark colours are produced for the most part with iron oxide pigments, the bright colours with pigments of organic origin. All pigments were examined by a toxicologist and are classified as being physiologically harmless. Among other requirements Armstrong DLW Linoleum therefore meets the demands of the toy norm EN71 or better and the various legal requirements for the colouring of consumer goods.

Cork powder

Wood and cork are renewable raw materials which are processed as wood powder and cork shreds and which do not contain any preservatives.

The cork powder is obtained from the bark of the cork oak. In our production we use cork powder as post industrial waste from cork factories, such as the shoe industry or the bottle cork manufacturing industry.

Linseed Oil

Linseed oil is made of the seeds of the linseed flax plant. The main suppliers are Canada and Argentina, but linseed is also cultivated in Europe, especially in France, Great Britain and the eastern part of Germany. The linseed oil used in linoleum production has the same purity standard as the oil used in the food industry.

Limestone

Limestone is sufficiently available all over the world and it is used as a filler in the form of powder.

Wood powder

Wood and cork are renewable raw materials which are processed as wood powder and cork shreds and which do not contain any preservatives.

Wood powder itself is already a recycled product. It is obtained from sawdust and wood shavings and is made of Scandinavian spruce, in other words from managed European forests.
