Community Involvement

Community

At Armstrong, contributing to our communities has been valued for 146 years. We believe we have a special responsibility and role to play in helping our communities thrive. We balance business goals with our commitment to community. Our philanthropy and volunteerism focus on education, disaster relief, building better communities, and maintaining a clean, safe environment. We want every community where our employees live and work to be a better place because we are there.

Armstrong Foundation

In 1985, the Armstrong Foundation was formed to enhance the neighborhoods in which its employees live and work. Millions of dollars each year have been donated to community caring efforts.  Today, the Foundation philanthropy takes many forms and is largely allocated to the causes our employees are passionate about. Making a difference is something we do together—a partnership between culture and community across the United States.

The Armstrong Foundation contributes over $300,000 to higher education scholarship programs each year. There are two kinds of Company-sponsored scholarships for the sons and daughters of employees and retirees – the Armstrong Merit Scholarship and the Armstrong Special Scholarship. All scholarship recipients are chosen by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

Through the Foundation’s Gift-Matching Program, employees can match their monetary gifts and hours of volunteer time to 501 (c)(3) organizations.

American Cancer Society Relay for Life

Relay for Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated. Employees around the country participate in this annual community event through volunteerism and sponsorships.

American Heart Association

Armstrong partners with the American Heart Association through sponsorship and volunteerism to its signature fund-raising event -- the Heart Walk. The Walk promotes physical activity and heart-healthy living raising funds to save lives from this country’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers, heart disease and stroke.  The Wellness committees at many company sites combine the Walk with a year-round fitness campaign.

Habitat for Humanity

As a manufacturer of building products, Armstrong has established a partnership of financial support and volunteerism with Habitat for Humanity. Employees have participated in builds around the nation helping Habitat homeowners build their dreams. Armstrong also committed to donate Armstrong floor products to 100 Women Build houses and established a program to provide floor product for Habitat homes in and around its plant communities.

KaBOOM!

Armstrong supports KaBOOM!, a non-profit partner whose vision is to create great place spaces within walking distance of every child in North America. In the past five years, employees built 15 playgrounds in Armstrong plant communities in partnership with KaBOOM!.

KaBOOM! allows Armstrong to bring a meaningful volunteer initiative to its plant communities. The KaBOOM! projects offer a unique opportunity for employees to work side by side with members of the local community on a tangible structure that will have a lasting positive impact for the neighborhood.

McCaskey School Mentorship Program

In 2004, a team of Armstrong volunteer-mentors began this program at Lancaster’s McCaskey High School to reduce the dropout rate. Focused on the theme of business and technology, they share their experience and knowledge in a classroom or lab setting. The mentors act as professional role models, setting a positive example and building students’ trust and understanding of the local business community.

Over 500 students have been touched by the program since its inception with over 45 Armstrong employees involved as mentors. The program provides mentors who teach life skills to students during their freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years.

Military Families Home Maintenance Program

Armstrong is proud of its employees serving in the military and one way they show them their gratitude is through the Military Families Home Maintenance Program. The program provides minor home maintenance and repair work for families of employees deployed by the military. Maintaining their homes while they are away gives them one less thing to worry about while serving our country during harrowing times.

   United Service Organizations

Since World War II, the USO has been a steadfast supporter of military personnel around the world. While times have changed, the USO mission has remained the same: to boost the morale of service members and serve as the link between them and the American people. Today the USO delivers its programs and services to 1.4 million active duty service members and 1.2 million National Guard and Reserves as well as their families at more than 130 centers located worldwide.
