Personalization has become an important interior design trend in recent years. Now Armstrong introduces a whole new dimension of personalization – for your floor! With new shapes and sizes in our Alterna collection.
Alterna luxury vinyl tile is a beautiful alternative to natural stone and ceramic tile, and just like those products, Alterna is available in various sizes. In addition to 16” x 16” and 12” x 12” sizes, you can now get 12” x 24”, 8” x 16” and 8” x 8” in thirty Alterna designs.

In a recent interview, I talked with Mara Villanueva-Heras, V.P. of Marketing for Armstrong Residential Flooring, about SURFACES – the biggest trade show for the flooring industry in the U.S. – and the home décor trends that are getting her excited this year. Here’s what she had to say:
HA: Let’s start by describing what SURFACES is.
MVH: SURFACES serves as the industry’s meeting place to unveil new floor covering products, tools, and technologies. The show was a tremendous success for us this year. Our focus was to launch new products and highlight some unique merchandising and marketing concepts.
HA: What trends did you see at the show this year?
First, what is a hand-scraped floor? An authentic hand-scraped (hand-sculpted) wood floor has a distinctive surface texture. To make our collections, each plank is scraped with a tool for a distinctive, one-of-a-kind floor. No two planks are the same. Then we give the wood a color stain and pre-finish it with a factory coating using leading edge technology.
If you haven’t looked at vinyl sheet floors lately, you may be pleasantly surprised. Vinyl sheet has come a long way since the days when patterns looked fake, and the floors were super-shiny and plastic-y. Today’s vinyl sheet floors are produced with state-of-the-art, 3D print and embossing technologies that allow manufacturers to create realistic images and textures, so stone patterns feel like real stone and wood patterns feel like real wood.
Our flooring design team tracks color trends several ways, like participating in The Color Marketing Group, following color influencers on Pinterest and reading many, many trend blogs!
Now we’re tracking an emerging color trend for 2013: Chalky Pastels.
