Purchasing and installing a hardwood floor is equally as exciting as it is intimidating. You are getting a gorgeous new floor but now how do you keep it looking that way. I’m Melissa Maker from Clean My Space a YouTube channel and blog all about cleaning. On behalf of Armstrong, I’m going to share with you my cleaning routine for cleaning hardwood floors and sharing some best practices with you as well. By the time I’m through, you’ll know exactly how to keep your hardwood floor clean and gorgeous for years to come. I always start my cleaning routine by sweeping or vacuuming with a hard floor attachment. This is important so crumbs and dirt can’t scratch the floor if caught under foot or while mopping. I’ve seen it happen and trust me it’s not pretty. I’m a stickler for using the right products, tools and techniques. So once I swept, I’m going to grab a flat head microfiber mop. For products Armstrong has developed really fantastic cleaners that can actually be used on any brand of hardwood flooring. Look for either Armstrong Hardwood and Laminate floor cleaner or Bruce Hardwood and Laminate floor cleaner. I really like these no rinse products. Because they leave the floors without that haze and streaking which comes from buildup. Which I have seen this happen with other floor cleaners. Simply mist the product onto the floor. Then working section-by-section mop in a back and forth motion going with the grain to help reduce the appearance of streaks. Now I get asked about using steam cleaners on hardwood. Now Armstrong’s best practices do not include using steam cleaners. Some can generate too much moisture. That combined with a damp pad can cause damage to your investment. A few more quick best practices from Armstrong to keep your floor in great shape. Keep abrasive cleaning products and tools off the floor which will cause scratching and damage. Also remember to sweep and vacuum the floor regularly to remove anything else that could scratch it. Keep an absorbent door map in your entry way to absorb moisture and trap dirt, sand and stones. Not surprisingly the majority of dirt in your home comes from your shoes. Wipe up any spills as soon as possible to avoid any damage can come to the surface. To avoid furniture marks or dents on the floor use Armstrong’s felt floor protectors on chairs and other furniture. No need to wax or polish your floors to maintain your investment. Don’t even think about using ammonia based cleaners detergents, bleach, or acidic liquids such as vinegar.
