ARMSTRONG TO PLANT HALF MILLION TREES IN 2008
Armstrong World Industries, the world’s largest hardwood flooring company, is planting and managing 506,000 hardwood trees this year in the U.S. in partnership with the Hardwood Forestry Fund. This planting is focused on replacing trees the company uses in its annual production of hardwood flooring.
“We are supporting the planting of more than a half million hardwood trees on public lands to further demonstrate our commitment to protecting forests and promoting responsible forest management practices,” said Frank J. Ready, president & CEO, Armstrong Floor Products N.A.
The Hardwood Forestry Fund, the philanthropic arm of the Hardwood Plywood & Veneer Association, matches environmentally conscious companies with forestry projects, and promotes hardwood timber growth, management, environmental education, and wise use of the nation's renewable forest resources.
Barbara McClendon, Hardwood Forestry Fund administrator, says, “Thanks to Armstrong, hardwood tree planting and regeneration projects will allow future forest establishment by creating more species diversity and by ensuring an abundance of native species in young stands.”
McClendon continues, “Even though most regeneration of hardwoods occurs naturally because of seed sources and the ability of hardwoods to sprout into the next generation of trees, seedling planting like this project with Armstrong is important because on many sites, natural regeneration of desired tree species does not occur or there is not a desired mix of species.”
The hardwood species that will be planted this spring include red oak, white oak, black cherry, walnut, maple, birch and others. The Armstrong-sponsored tree–planting and management projects will take place in four locations: Tygarts State Forest in Kentucky; Devil’s Lake State Park in Wisconsin; Salamonie River State Forest in Indiana; and Kumbrabow State Forest in West Virginia.
